John Haislip

A memorial service will be held later for John A. Haislip of Eugene, who died March 13 of age-­related causes. He was 85.

He was born Aug. 25, 1925, in Lancaster, Pa., to Thomas and Dorothy Eaton Haislip. He married Karen Locke on Aug. 25, 1985, in Santa Cruz, Calif.

He earned a doctorate from the University of Washington and was an English professor emeritus of creative writing and literature at the University of Oregon.

He was a distinguished poet. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Jeanne “Beth” Martin of Portland; three stepdaughters, Linda Greenwood of Portland, and Susan Downs and Stacey Locke, both of Eugene; a stepson, John Downs of Nebraska; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
