CRWR Faculty Statement of Support for Black Lives Matter
The University of Oregon’s Creative Writing Program supports the ongoing protests against the systemic racism and violence perpetrated against Black lives in the United States over the course of its existence—typified recently by the horrific murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery—and the longer journey towards manifesting a truly equitable society.
As poets and prose writers, we acknowledge our obligation as artists and people to reflect on the insidious effects of racism and how legacies of colonialism, imperialism, and slavery have led us to this moment. We understand the importance of using our positions to empower tomorrow’s voices. In this spirit, we endorse the demands made by the Black Student Collective.
Over the course of its existence, the University of Oregon Creative Writing Program has had a tradition of racial diversity among its faculty, students, and visiting writers. It’s our goal to both honor and build on that legacy, and dedicate ourselves to the ongoing work necessary to make this program welcoming and empowering to all.
